Anesthesia Options

There are four different anesthesia options available to you. Each helps to block pain during procedures. Dr. Katabi will explain all methods of anesthesia to you. Dr. Katabi will recommend what they believe to be the best form for your procedure and situation. Please follow given directions related to the type of anesthesia you will be undergoing.

Armitage Oral Surgery | Sedation   Anesthesia, Surgical Extractions and Wisdom Teeth Extractions

Local Anesthesia (Novacaine)

Local Anesthesia (Novacaine) Injections of medications which numb the surgical site only

IV Sedation (Twilight Sleep)

Light sleep which occurs once IV medications are given

Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas)

More commonly used in general dental procedures to reduce anxiety and instill calmness. It is not always predictable for the highly anxious patient.

Deep Sedation / General

Anesthesia (Completely Asleep)Complete unawareness which occurs through IV medication 3

Patients Undergoing Local Anesthesia Only

You may eat a light meal prior to your surgical appointment. Take all prescribed medications as directed by your family physician with a small sip of water.

Diabetes medications can be continued as usual with normal diet unless fasting.

Anticoagulants (i.e Coumadin, Plavix, aspirin, etc.) may need to be stopped. Contact your family physician for specific instructions related to these types of medications. Plan for a soft food diet such as soup, ice cream, mashed potatoes, etc.

Patients Undergoing General Anesthesia or IV Sedation

Do NOT eat or drink anything 6-8 hours prior to surgery. You MUST have a responsible adult 18 years or older drive you home. They MUST remain in the office throughout the procedure. Surgery will not begin until the driver is present. You cannot take public transportation home. You may ride in a taxi with an escort. No driving, or strenuous activities for at least 24 hours afterthe procedure.

Wear loose fitting, and comfortable clothing. Do not wear contact lenses, and remove any facial or oral piercings.

After Surgery

Verbal & written post-operative instructions will be given. A written prescription will be given. You will have to pick this up at the pharmacy of your choice. You can return to work when you feel up to it, or per our instructions. We can supply you with a doctor's note if you need one.

About Our Practice

Dr. Katabi has extensive knowledge, training and certification in a wide variety of anesthesia techniques. Dr. Katabi is certified by both the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and the National Dental Board of Anesthesiology. All staff members have various certifications related to cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), emergency patient care, and patients undergoing anesthesia.

Throughout your visit you will always be under the watchful and experienced care of one of AOS's clinical staff.
